    Quick Summary

    • Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September 2026, the second model in its Claude 5.5 family after Opus 5.5.
    • Sonnet 5.5 runs more than 30 percent faster and costs up to 30 percent less per task than Sonnet 5, at the same per token price.
    • Zendesk reported its support tickets were processed 20 percent faster after switching to Sonnet 5.5, with fewer wrong decisions.
    • xAI launched Team Bots the same day, shared AI coworkers a whole team can use together, with insurer Harper saving customers over 120,000 US dollars after building one in 24 hours.

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September 2026, the second model in its new Claude 5.5 family. It runs more than 30 percent faster than Sonnet 5 and costs up to 30 percent less per task, without a price increase, which matters for any business already paying for Claude.

    What did Anthropic announce?

Sonnet 5.5 is positioned as the faster, cheaper partner to Claude Opus 5.5, which launched a week earlier. Where Opus 5.5 is built for complex work needing careful judgment, Sonnet 5.5 is aimed at well scoped everyday tasks: fixing bugs, drafting documents, and building spreadsheets and slides. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, a test of agentic coding, Sonnet 5.5 scored 70.6 percent against Sonnet 5's 10.3 percent. Pricing is unchanged at 2 US dollars per million input tokens and 10 US dollars per million output tokens, but Anthropic says the model typically needs far fewer tokens to do the same work, cutting real cost per task by up to 30 percent. A third model, Claude Haiku 5.5, is expected within weeks.

We fed Claude Sonnet 5.5 hundreds of real support use cases across replies and escalation requests. It made fewer wrong decisions and resolved tickets faster than the Claude models we use in production today. Tickets were processed 20 percent faster, getting our customers the help they need without the wait.from Abhinay Kathuria, Director of AI, Zendesk (Anthropic, 28 September 2026)

What can Sonnet 5.5 actually do?

Anthropic and its early testers point to gains in three areas that matter for ordinary office work, not just coding benchmarks.

    • Documents, slides and spreadsheets: early testers said it has a sharp eye for design and can follow a slide template closely enough that the first draft needs little editing.
    • Customer support and admin: it batches steps together more efficiently, so tasks that once took many back and forth exchanges now finish in fewer steps.
    • Coding and bug fixing: it understands an existing codebase quickly and holds up on system design reviews, according to testers at Epic Games and Unity.

Does this matter for a small business?

Yes, because the model your team already uses in Claude just got faster and cheaper for no extra cost, right when more businesses are starting to build AI into daily work. Sonnet 5.5 is available now on claude.ai and the Claude Platform, as well as AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, so there is nothing extra to buy or install. For a business running reports, proposals, or customer replies through Claude, this kind of update usually shows up as work finishing faster with no change in your subscription bill.

    Also today

    • xAI launched Team Bots on 28 September 2026, shared AI coworkers a whole team can use together, with insurer Harper saving customers over 120,000 US dollars after building one in 24 hours (xAI).
    • Malaysia is considering expanding its AI and digital technology pilot, currently running in six pondok schools across Perak, Penang, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah and Pahang, to institutions nationwide after positive early results, said Minister Zulkifli Hasan (Bernama).

    What to do this week

If your business already has a Claude subscription, there is nothing to configure, Sonnet 5.5 is simply the model working behind the scenes on the Claude apps and platform today. If you have not tried Claude for daily work yet, this is a good week to start, since the everyday tasks it now handles faster, drafting documents, checking spreadsheets, answering customer queries, are exactly what most small businesses spend the most admin hours on. In our Master Claude AI for Business Productivity program, we show business owners how to put these updates to work on real HR, finance and admin tasks without a costly technical overhaul.

    Common Questions

    What is Claude Sonnet 5.5?
Claude Sonnet 5.5 is Anthropic's second model in its Claude 5.5 family, released 28 September 2026. It is a faster, lower cost complement to Claude Opus 5.5, built for everyday tasks like fixing bugs, writing documents, and building spreadsheets and slides, running more than 30 percent faster than Sonnet 5.
Is Claude Sonnet 5.5 more expensive than Sonnet 5?
No. Pricing stays the same at 2 US dollars per million input tokens and 10 US dollars per million output tokens, but Anthropic says the model needs far fewer tokens to finish the same task, so it costs up to 30 percent less per task in practice.
Can a small business in Sabah use Claude Sonnet 5.5 today?
Yes. Sonnet 5.5 is already available on claude.ai, the Claude Platform, and major cloud providers including AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, so any business already subscribed to Claude can start using it now without extra setup.
