Barclays uses Claude to answer staff questions and route 120,000 client emails a day, real work, not just chat.

Barclays Uses Claude to Sort 120,000 Client Emails Every Day

    Quick Summary

    • Barclays is expanding Claude across its global operations, targeting Claude Code use by half its developers by the end of 2026, announced 1 October 2026.
    • Barclays' Claude powered Colleague Knowledge Assistant has been used by more than 16,000 staff for over a million searches since 2025.
    • Barclays' Global Markets team uses Claude to classify and route around 120,000 client emails every day.
    • OpenAI's new always on agents, called dots, can complete real multi step tasks such as preparing an overdue invoice on their own.

Barclays, one of the world's largest banks, is expanding its use of Anthropic's Claude across global operations, targeting Claude Code adoption for half its developers by the end of 2026. Announced on 1 October 2026, it is one more sign of what AI for business is becoming: software that handles real, high volume work, not just chat replies.

What Did Barclays Announce About AI For Business?

Barclays is rolling Claude out across software development, legacy system modernisation and day to day operations. One live example is its Colleague Knowledge Assistant, used by more than 16,000 colleagues to answer questions for the bank's over 20 million UK retail customers, handling more than one million searches since it launched in 2025. In its Global Markets business, Claude models now classify and route roughly 120,000 client emails every single day, helping staff prioritise which ones need action first. Barclays says the rollout still runs on human oversight and governance, not on letting the model act alone.

Claude now helps 16,000 Barclays' colleagues find answers for customers, sorts 120,000 emails a day, and will be in the hands of most Barclays engineers by 2027. Very few institutions hold AI to such a high standard.from Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer, Anthropic (Anthropic, 1 October 2026)

What Can AI Agents Actually Do Today?

An AI agent is software that can carry out a multi step task on its own, inside your tools, instead of only answering one question at a time. On 29 September 2026, OpenAI introduced dots, always on agents inside ChatGPT that connect to over 4,000 apps and keep working on a task after you step away. The idea behind both launches is the same: AI is moving from a chat box you type into, to a worker that sits inside your existing systems.

    • A developer's dot watches customer feedback, builds and tests small fixes, and hands over a finished pull request to review.
    • A dot can notice a forgotten task on its own, such as an unpaid invoice, prepare it and send it once approved.
    • Specialist dots are being piloted inside companies for procurement, invoice processing and customer support, with Microsoft building the same idea into Agent 365.

Does This Matter For A Small Business?

Yes, and the lesson is not the size of Barclays' budget, it is the type of work being handed to AI. In our workshops in Kota Kinabalu, the most common question is whether AI can be trusted with real customer and operational work, not just drafting. Barclays' 120,000 emails a day and over a million searches answer that at bank scale, but the same categories, sorting enquiries, finding information fast, and answering repeat customer questions, are exactly what a small business deals with every day, just at a size you can start using this month, well before you would need anything close to a bank's budget or IT team.

    Also Today

    • Albertsons Companies, owner of Safeway, brought grocery shopping into ChatGPT so shoppers can turn a dinner idea into a checked out cart, serving over 36 million customers a week (OpenAI).
    • OpenAI disrupted a coordinated attempt, linked to accounts associated with Moonshot AI's Kimi team, to extract hidden reasoning from its models for training rival systems, banning accounts tied to more than 15,000 users (OpenAI).

    What To Do This Week

Pick one repeat task, such as sorting enquiries or answering the same customer question, and test whether Claude or ChatGPT can handle the first draft of it this week. You do not need Barclays' engineering team to start, you need one clear task and a way to check the output before it reaches a customer. Write down how long that task takes you today, run it through AI for a week, and compare. This is exactly what we walk through, tool by tool, in Master Claude AI for Business Productivity.

    Common Questions

What does AI for business actually look like right now?
Right now it looks like Claude or ChatGPT quietly doing one real job inside a company, such as Barclays using Claude to sort 120,000 emails a day or answer staff questions more than a million times. For a small business, it means the same kind of task, sized down, not a chatbot bolted onto a website.
Can a small business use AI agents like Barclays does?
Yes. You will not run Claude Code across hundreds of developers, but the same building blocks, an AI agent that reads documents, drafts replies or sorts enquiries, work at any size. Start with one task, such as answering common customer questions, and expand once you trust the output.
What is an AI agent such as OpenAI's dots?
An AI agent is software that can complete a task across several steps on its own, such as researching, drafting and sending a document, instead of only replying to one message. OpenAI's dots, launched 29 September 2026, connect to thousands of apps and keep working even after you close the chat.
