    Quick Summary

    • Google began rolling out Gemini Skills in Workspace from 5 October 2026, replacing Gems by no sooner than March 2027 for business and enterprise customers.
    • Skills let a user save a custom instruction once, such as a brand voice or report format, and trigger it anytime with a forward slash command.
    • President Trump formed a new Super Intelligence Force on 4 October 2026, giving it 120 days to report on AI risks and opportunities.
    • Anthropic has published two new AI policy proposals calling for government authority to block dangerous AI deployments while protecting innovation.

Google has started rolling out Gemini Skills, reusable custom instructions that automate repetitive work, across Google Workspace from 5 October 2026, replacing Gems over the next several months. For businesses running on Gmail, Docs and Sheets, this changes how staff can standardise reports, emails and proposals without hiring more help.

What Are Google's New Gemini Skills?

Google began rolling out Gemini Skills, reusable prompts that guide Gemini, inside Gemini chat globally on 30 September 2026, then started bringing the same feature to Google Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit and education customers from 5 October 2026. According to Google's product announcement, a skill lets you save an instruction once, such as a brand voice guide or a weekly report format, then trigger it anytime by typing a forward slash and the skill's name directly in the prompt bar. Skills will gradually replace Gems, which stop working for Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit customers no sooner than March 2027, and for education customers no sooner than June 2027. Any Gems still in use when that happens are automatically migrated into draft skills.

With skills, you can save your most-used instructions once and run them endlessly, so you can skip the repetitive prompting and jump straight to the results.from Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, Google (Google, 30 September 2026)

What Can Gemini Skills Actually Do For A Business?

    • Build a brand voice skill once, then draft emails, proposals or social captions in that same voice every time, without retyping the instructions.
    • Stack two or more skills together in one prompt, for example a vendor evaluator skill with an executive summary skill, to analyse and draft a recommendation in a single step.
    • Attach reference files such as PDFs, price lists or plain text documents directly to a skill, so Gemini always checks the right document before answering.
    • Share a skill with teammates in Google Workspace, so a whole department drafts reports, client replies or meeting notes in the same format.

How Could Your Team Use Gemini Skills?

Yes, if your business already runs on Gmail, Google Docs or Sheets, because Gemini Skills works inside the tools your team opens every day rather than a separate chatbot tab. A small accounting firm in Kota Kinabalu could build one skill for drafting client invoices and another for summarising bank statements, then stack both when preparing a monthly report, instead of retyping the same instructions by hand every time. In our workshops the most common question from business owners is how to make AI repeatable instead of retyping the same prompt every day, and Gemini Skills is Google's direct answer to that question for the businesses already paying for Workspace. Claude, which many of our own graduates already use, has a very similar Skills feature of its own, so the underlying idea, save the instruction once and reuse it, is becoming the standard way serious businesses work with AI rather than a one off trick.

    Also Today

    • President Trump announced a new Super Intelligence Force on 4 October 2026, a White House task force chaired by national intelligence director Jay Clayton with 120 days to report on the risks and opportunities of AI (TechCrunch).
    • Anthropic has published two new AI policy proposals, an Advanced AI Framework and an Economic Policy Framework, calling for government authority to block dangerous AI deployments while protecting innovation and smaller developers (Anthropic).

    What To Do This Week

If your team already uses Gmail, Docs or Sheets, open Gemini this week and build one skill around your most repeated task, such as a weekly status update, a standard client reply or a meeting notes format, before Gems are retired next year. Teams that want a structured way to turn ChatGPT and Claude into daily tools for HR, finance, admin and reporting, including building reusable workflows like this one, can learn the full system in NextGen Training Academy's Master Claude AI for Business Productivity program.

    Common Questions

What is Gemini Skills in Google Workspace?
Gemini Skills are reusable custom instructions you save once in Gmail, Docs, Sheets or the Gemini app, then trigger anytime by typing a forward slash and the skill's name. They are replacing Gems, Google's older tool for customising Gemini, over the next several months.
When will Gemini Skills be available for businesses in Malaysia?
Google began rolling out skills in Workspace from 5 October 2026 for Rapid Release domains, completing by around 12 October, with Scheduled Release domains following from 19 October. Skills in the Gemini app itself start from 13 October 2026, available to Google Workspace customers and personal account users alike.
Do I need to pay extra for Gemini Skills?
No separate fee. Skills in Workspace are included for Business Starter, Standard and Plus plans and Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus plans, while skills in the Gemini app are available across Google AI subscription tiers, so most businesses already on these plans get it automatically.
