- The model leads open models on cybersecurity defence, scoring 82 percent on reproducing and patching a real software vulnerability, the highest score of any model tested.
- It beats GPT-6 Astra on finance and legal benchmarks and ranked second among five tested models on a blind human evaluation of coding quality.
- Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch said the model is good and improving rapidly, with full open weights still to come.
Mistral, a French AI company, released Mistral Large 4 on 6 October 2026, a new open weight AI model nicknamed Le Chonk. It is available to try today through a preview API, with full open weights due by the end of October, and it already leads other open models on cybersecurity, finance and legal work.
What Did Mistral Announce?
Mistral Large 4 is a 1 trillion parameter model with 52 billion active parameters, built to understand text and images natively rather than adding vision on afterward. According to Mistral's own announcement, the company trained it from scratch on close to 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs inside its own European data centres, and it is fluent in more than 160 languages, including every official language of the European Union. The preview is live now on Mistral Studio, priced at 1.36 US dollars per million input tokens and 4.18 US dollars per million output tokens, and the full open weights follow by the end of October 2026.

What Can Mistral Large 4 Actually Do?
- On the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, an independent test of how well AI models find and patch real security flaws, Mistral Large 4 ranks among the top five models worldwide and scores 82 percent on reproducing and fixing a real vulnerability, the highest of any model tested.
- Several closed models, including Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, score close to zero on that same cyber test because they refuse to attempt it, according to Mistral, while Mistral Large 4 completes the work.
- On AutomationBench, a test of 657 real business workflows across apps such as Gmail, Google Sheets, Slack and Salesforce, it scores 59.9 percent, ahead of the other open models tested alongside it.
- It beats GPT-6 Astra on both the Finance Agent v2 benchmark and Harvey's Legal Agent Benchmark, and outperforms every other open source model on the legal test, according to third party evaluator vals.ai.
- In a blind human evaluation of coding quality run by Surge AI, professional annotators ranked Mistral Large 4 second out of five tested models, behind only Claude Opus 5.
How Could Your Business Use It?
Because the weights are open, a clinic, an accounting firm or a retailer that cannot send sensitive patient records, financial statements or customer data to an outside server can run Mistral Large 4 on its own hardware or a private cloud instead, then use it to draft reports, check contracts or analyse spreadsheets without that data ever leaving the building. A law firm could use it to summarise case documents, a manufacturing business could use its visual grounding to check parts against technical drawings, and any business doing security work gets a model that will actually try to reproduce and patch a real vulnerability instead of refusing the task. In our workshops the most common question is whether AI is safe enough for real client data, and open weight models like this one are becoming part of that answer.

What Should You Do This Week?
If your business already stores sensitive client or financial data, ask whoever manages your AI tools whether an open weight model like Mistral Large 4 could run on infrastructure you control, instead of sending that data to an outside provider. Even if you stick with ChatGPT or Claude day to day, this week is a good time to review which of your business documents actually need to leave your laptop at all. Teams in Kota Kinabalu that want a structured way to use Claude safely on real HR, finance and admin work, including Claude Projects and Cowork for exactly this kind of document heavy task, can learn the full system in NextGen Training Academy's Master Claude AI for Business Productivity program.
