Quick Summary
- Google announced the Gemini agent on 8 October 2026, a single AI agent for business that plans work, completes tasks, and connects to company software instead of only answering questions.
- The agent can delegate work to temporary sub agents and keep running for hours or days, continuing even after a user closes their laptop.
- It can choose the best AI model for each job, including Anthropic's Claude models today, and gets its own company email address and audit trail.
- Google's own customers reported real gains, including Bradesco cutting document review time from one hour to five minutes and Bunnings saving staff half a million hours of administrative work.
Google announced the Gemini agent on 8 October 2026 at its Gemini at Work event, a single AI agent built for business that plans projects, completes tasks across your company's software, and reports back with finished work. Unlike a chatbot that only answers questions, the Gemini agent for business takes on an objective and works through it on its own.
What is Google's new Gemini agent for business?
At the Gemini at Work 2026 event, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian introduced the Gemini agent as the company's new single, universal agent for work. It replaces separate tools for chat, coding and content creation with one agent that answers questions, plans multi step projects, writes and runs code, and connects to the software your business already uses, including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Salesforce and databases such as BigQuery and Snowflake.
You give it objectives, not instructions. You delegate an outcome and come back to finished work.from Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud (Google Cloud Blog, 8 October 2026)
What can the Gemini agent actually do?
- It plans the work itself: give it an objective, like preparing a credit memo or reviewing a contract, and it breaks the task into steps instead of waiting for step by step instructions.
- It delegates to sub agents: for a bigger project, it creates temporary, job specific helper agents, coordinates them, and keeps working even after you close your laptop.
- It picks the right AI model for each job, including Anthropic's Claude models today, and more private and open models later, rather than being locked to one model.
- It gets its own workplace identity: a coworker style Gemini agent has its own company email address and calendar context, and leaves an audit trail under its own name instead of a person's.
How could your business use it?
Google's own customer examples show the scale of the change. Bradesco, one of Brazil's largest banks, used it to cut document review time from one hour to five minutes while reducing risk inconsistencies by 60 percent. At Bunnings, part of Australia's Wesfarmers retail group, an internal agent saved staff half a million hours of administrative work. A much smaller business does not need that scale to benefit: a retailer or clinic could hand the agent an objective, such as reconciling supplier invoices or chasing overdue payments, and let it work through the backlog while staff focus on customers.
Also today
- Anthropic expanded its Claude for Startups program, now offering eligible startups a free year of Claude Team, up to five seats, plus 1,000 US dollars in API credits and access to Claude Marketplace (TechCrunch, 6 October 2026).
- OpenAI reportedly told investors its annualised revenue is approaching 50 billion US dollars, about 20 billion US dollars lower than the 70 billion figure reported a week earlier, according to the Financial Times (TechCrunch, 8 October 2026).
What should you do this week?
You do not need an enterprise contract to start thinking this way. This week, pick one task your team repeats often, like compiling a weekly report or chasing payment status across emails, and write it down as an objective rather than a set of instructions: what you want done, not each click to get there. That is the shift agentic tools like the Gemini agent, and Claude's own agent features, are built around. If you want a structured way to build this skill with Claude specifically, including Claude Projects and Cowork for exactly this kind of multi step business work, that is what we teach in Master Claude AI for Business Productivity in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
Common Questions
- What is Google's new Gemini agent?
- The Gemini agent is a single AI agent Google announced on 8 October 2026 at its Gemini at Work event. Instead of only answering questions, it takes an objective, plans the steps, connects to business software like Workspace, Slack and Salesforce, and delegates parts of the work to temporary sub agents, reporting back with finished work.
- Can the Gemini agent use AI models other than Google's own?
- Yes. Google said the Gemini agent chooses the best model for each task, orchestrating across its own Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude models today, with other private and open models planned for the future. The agent itself stays the same even if the underlying model changes.
- Is the Gemini agent available to businesses now?
- Google is rolling the Gemini agent out to businesses first, before bringing it to consumers, reachable from web, mobile, desktop, the command line, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow and Slack. Early testers included On, Shopify and PayPal, alongside large Gemini Enterprise customers such as BNP Paribas and Ulta Beauty.
