Microsoft's New Copilot Autopilot Works Even When You Log Off

By Edison Chua 12 October 2026 3 min read

Microsoft rebuilt Copilot into three modes, and Autopilot now chases tasks and threads while nobody is online.

Microsoft's New Copilot Autopilot Works Even When You Log Off

    Quick Summary

    • Microsoft rebuilt Copilot around three modes, Home, Code and Autopilot, announced in late September 2026 and rolling out through October.
    • Autopilot keeps working after you close the app, monitoring channels, following up on threads and resuming projects on its own.
    • Code turns a plain language description into a working tracker, dashboard or small internal app, with no developer required.
    • A McKinsey Global Institute report dated 29 September 2026 estimates about 11 million US workers may need to change occupations by 2035 because of automation and AI.

Microsoft has rebuilt Copilot around three modes, Home, Code and Autopilot, with Autopilot built to keep working on its own. You give it a name, a role and a goal, and it monitors channels, follows up on threads and resumes projects without you ever opening the app.

What is Microsoft's new Copilot Autopilot?

The update, announced by Microsoft in late September 2026, replaces separate chat and task modes with one unified app built around Home, Code and Autopilot. Home brings Chat and Cowork together with Word, Excel and PowerPoint embedded directly inside Copilot, so you no longer switch between separate programs for everyday office work. Code is the second new mode: describe a tracker, dashboard or small internal tool in plain language, and Copilot builds it using the same engine behind GitHub Copilot, hosted inside your own Microsoft 365 account rather than a public server.

Autopilot is a persistent, proactive and personal agent that keeps working even when you're not.from Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President, AI at Work, Microsoft (Thurrott, 25 September 2026)

What can Autopilot and Code actually do?

    • Autopilot can monitor a channel or inbox, follow up on open threads and pick a stalled project back up later without someone restarting it.
    • Code turns a plain language description into a working tracker, dashboard or small app, with no developer required.
    • Office apps, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, now sit inside the same Copilot window instead of separate programs.
    • Long PowerPoint jobs keep running after you close the app or switch devices, then notify you once they are done.

How could your business use it?

A clinic could set Autopilot to watch its booking inbox and chase unconfirmed appointments overnight, so the front desk opens to a shorter list instead of a full inbox. A retailer could ask Code to build a simple stock tracker instead of paying for custom software it may only use for one season. An accounting firm could let Autopilot summarise overdue invoices every Monday morning before anyone opens a laptop, turning a recurring chore into something that is already waiting when staff arrive. None of this needs a technical team, only someone willing to describe the task clearly, check its work and correct it when it gets something wrong.

    Also today

    • McKinsey Global Institute's 29 September 2026 report estimates about 11 million US workers, roughly 6.5 percent of the labour force, may need to change occupations by 2035 because of automation and AI (CNN Business).
    • Salesforce renamed its Agentforce 1 tier to Agentforce Max in October and raised its yearly automation credit allowance, with AI Skills and Agent Optimizer features due for wider availability this month (PricingSaaS).

What should you try this week?

Start small. Pick one repetitive task, chasing payments, confirming bookings or compiling a weekly report, and see whether a similar always on assistant could take the first pass for you. You do not need Microsoft's exact tools to get the idea: giving an AI a clear role and letting it work continuously is exactly what we teach hands on in Master Claude AI for Business Productivity, where Sabah business owners build their own Claude Projects, Skills and Cowork workflows instead of only watching a demo.

    Common Questions

    What is Microsoft Copilot Autopilot?
Autopilot is a persistent mode inside Microsoft's rebuilt Copilot app that keeps working after you close it. You assign it a name, a role and a goal, and it monitors channels, follows up on tasks and resumes projects on its own, entering private preview from late September 2026.
Can Copilot's Code mode really build an app without a developer?
Yes, for simple internal tools. You describe a tracker, dashboard or small workflow in plain language and Copilot builds it using the same engine as GitHub Copilot, hosted inside your company's own Microsoft 365 account. It suits small internal apps, not full custom software.
Is Copilot Autopilot available to small businesses right now?
Not widely yet. Microsoft is rolling Home and Code out gradually through its early access Frontier programme, with Autopilot still in private preview and no fixed public release date confirmed, so most small businesses will see it only after this initial rollout finishes.
