Shopify Canvas Can Now Build Your Entire Online Store By Chat
A chat based tool now builds a complete working online store in about twenty minutes, no coding required.

Quick Summary
- Shopify launched Canvas on 1 October 2026, a chat based workspace where its Sidekick AI agent builds a complete, working online store from a conversation.
- Shopify's Ben Sehl, Director of Product, says a merchant can now build a fully customised store in about twenty minutes, down from the two weeks it took him to build one by hand twelve years ago.
- Canvas renders the real code behind the store, not a static mockup, so a retailer can test layouts and screen sizes before publishing.
- The initial release does not yet support third party themes, app extensions, multiple markets or translations; Shopify says those are coming later.
Shopify launched Canvas on 1 October 2026, a chat based workspace where you describe your store to its Sidekick AI agent and watch it build the real, working site in front of you. Shopify says a fully customised store now takes about twenty minutes instead of weeks of manual setup.
What Did Shopify Announce?
Canvas is a new way to use Sidekick, the AI agent Shopify already had writing code, building apps and customising themes inside stores. Instead of typing commands into a side panel and waiting to see the result elsewhere, you now describe what you want in plain language and watch Sidekick build it directly inside a visual workspace, with every change appearing as it happens. Shopify says it gave Sidekick direct access to theme files and simplified its underlying theme architecture specifically so the agent could work with stores more reliably.

What Can It Actually Do?
- Builds a complete store from a written description, including layout, pages and navigation, not just a single section.
- Renders the real code behind the store rather than a static mockup, so you can test how it looks and behaves across screen sizes before publishing.
- Lets you click any element to edit it by hand, so you are never stuck waiting on a prompt to fix a small detail.
- Works alongside Shopify's existing store editor, so your current workflow still applies once the first draft is built.
What Does It Not Do Yet?
Canvas is desktop only for now, and it needs a staff account with edit code permission on a plan that supports theme customisation. Shopify says this first release does not yet support third party themes, app blocks and extensions, multiple markets, translations or theme updates, and that these are coming over time. It is also built specifically for stores already on Shopify, so it will not help if you sell on another platform.
How Could Your Business Use It?
A retailer opening an online shop for the first time could describe their brand and products in a chat and have a working store ready to review the same afternoon, instead of briefing a developer and waiting weeks for a first draft. An existing Shopify merchant could use it to test a redesign, a seasonal promotion page or a new collection layout without touching code, then click in to adjust a button or an image by hand. A small team running several product lines could use the same chat to spin up a dedicated landing page for each one, checking how it reads on a phone before it goes live.
Also Today
- DeepSeek released an updated open source model, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017, under the free MIT licence, with better coding and task automation scores and shorter, cheaper outputs than its predecessor (DeepSeek, 17 October 2026).
- Google began rolling its Gemini 4 Argon model out to Gemini app subscribers on the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans, days after making it available to businesses through Google Cloud (Google, 13 October 2026).
What Should You Try This Week?
If you have been putting off a new online store, a redesign or a seasonal landing page because it meant waiting on a developer, this is the moment to test whether a tool like Canvas gets you close enough on the first try. Describe the store or page you want in plain language, see what comes back, then decide what still needs a human touch before you publish it. That same build it yourself with AI mindset, picking the right tool and knowing where to still check the work, is exactly what we teach hands on in AI Full-Stack Building for Business, where business owners in Sabah leave with a real, working project instead of just a plan.

- How long does it take to build a store with Canvas?
