OpenAI and Google Cloud announced on 21 October 2026 that OpenAI's frontier models and its Codex coding agent are coming to Google Cloud's Model Garden, purchasable through the Google Cloud Marketplace. Businesses already running on Google Cloud can now use OpenAI's models without a separate vendor contract, drawing on cloud spend they have already committed.
What did OpenAI and Google Cloud announce?
The two companies are bringing OpenAI's frontier models and its Codex agentic coding workflows into Google Cloud's Model Garden, the catalogue Google Cloud customers already use to find and deploy AI models. The models are paired with Google Cloud's own access controls, centralised data governance and infrastructure, which matters most to regulated industries that need control over who can touch sensitive data.
OpenAI models will also soon be available inside Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent, so a team can pick whichever model suits a task without switching platforms. General availability is planned in the coming weeks, and OpenAI confirmed Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner, so this is an additional option rather than a replacement.
Google Cloud is a leading platform for developers and businesses building AI agents, writing software, and putting AI to work. This partnership is an important step in making our most capable models and Codex available where customers are already building, giving them even more choice in how they use frontier AI as we grow the agentic ecosystem together.from Greg Brockman, President and co-founder, OpenAI (OpenAI, 21 October 2026)
What can your business actually do with it?
- Buy OpenAI's frontier models and Codex directly inside Google Cloud's Model Garden, without opening a separate OpenAI account
- Pay through the Google Cloud Marketplace and draw down Google Cloud spend commitments you already hold, instead of signing a new contract
- Keep Google Cloud's existing access controls and centralised data governance over who can reach sensitive company data
- Soon, choose OpenAI's models from inside Google Antigravity or the Gemini Agent as well, picking the best model for each task
Why does this matter for your business?
Most small businesses never touch Model Garden directly, but the change still matters: it is a sign that buying AI model access is becoming as simple as adding a line item to a cloud bill, instead of negotiating a separate agreement with every AI company. If your accounting firm, clinic or retail business in Sabah already runs its email, storage or billing on Google Cloud or Google Workspace, this is one more case of the AI tools you want becoming available through accounts you already manage, with one invoice and one set of access rules instead of several.

What to do this week
If your business already pays for Google Cloud, ask your IT lead or cloud reseller to flag you for Model Garden access once OpenAI's models go live there, so you are not stuck choosing between vendors when the option opens up. If you are not on Google Cloud, there is nothing to change yet, just know your options for buying AI model access are only getting simpler. In our Kota Kinabalu AI Full-Stack Building for Business workshop, teams build real projects with Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex directly, so whichever cloud those models end up running on, your team already knows how to put them to work.
Common Questions
- What is Google Cloud's Model Garden?
- Model Garden is Google Cloud's catalogue of AI models that customers can discover, buy and deploy from inside their existing Google Cloud account. It already carries Google's own Gemini models, and from this integration it will also carry OpenAI's frontier models and Codex.
- Does a business need a new OpenAI account to use this?
- No. Google Cloud customers will purchase OpenAI's models through the Google Cloud Marketplace, and enterprises with Google Cloud spend commitments can draw down those commitments for the purchase. General availability is planned in the coming weeks.
- Does this replace Microsoft as OpenAI's cloud partner?
- No. OpenAI confirmed Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner. The Google Cloud integration is an additional route for customers who are already on Google Cloud, giving them more choice in which model runs their workloads.
