- It ranks fourth overall on DesignArena's crowdsourced AI image leaderboard, and first worldwide for People and Portraits and for Landscapes and Nature.
- It is available now in Canva's Dream Lab and through Canva's public API, with a Canva MCP Server for AI agents coming soon.
Canva has launched Canva Craft, its first in-house AI image generation model, built by Canva Research. Craft plans a design's layout before it renders the final image, producing marketing graphics, social posts and more at up to 2K resolution in over 30 aspect ratios, available now to every Canva user worldwide.
What is Canva Craft?
Craft is the first foundation model trained entirely in-house by Canva Research, the company's AI lab. Unlike most image generators, Craft uses a two-stage architecture: it first writes a plan of the image, covering which elements appear, their scale and placement, and any text that needs to appear, before a second model renders that plan into a finished picture. Canva says this planning step is what gives Craft more accurate text rendering and object placement than one-shot generation.
The model trained on millions of real templates from Canva's own library, including social posts, presentations, posters, infographics and menus, so it learned proper design hierarchy and typography, not just what photographs look like. On DesignArena, a crowdsourced benchmark that compares AI image models, Craft debuted fourth overall and ranked first worldwide for both People and Portraits and Landscapes and Nature.
What can Craft actually do?
Craft is built for the kind of visual work a business actually produces day to day, not just artistic images. It supports more than 30 aspect ratios plus custom sizes, and it can generate legible text in 55 languages from a prompt written in any language.
- Generate images at up to 2K resolution, in any of 30+ aspect ratios or a custom size you set
- Write prompts in any language, with text rendered accurately in 55 languages
- Produce social posts, posters, flyers and ad visuals with layouts and hierarchy that are ready to use
- Convert outputs into editable layers through Canva's Magic Layers, so one element can be changed without redoing the whole image
How could your business use it?
A retailer can generate a week of on-brand social posts from one product photo brief, a restaurant can design a new menu board without hiring a designer, and a clinic can produce a waiting room poster explaining a new service, all from a text prompt inside Canva's existing Dream Lab tool. Because Craft keeps every element editable, you can swap a headline or change a colour afterward instead of regenerating the whole image from scratch. Developers can also call Craft through Canva's public API to build it into their own ordering pages or ad builders.
